Most people in North America are obsessed with attaining success. On the other hand, most members of this society are afraid of failure and try to avoid it.  The need for success and the desire to avoid failure are contradictory.  Failure is just a necessary step to success.  Most of the time you will have to experience many failures before you experience success.

The road to success is paved with failure --- failure and nothing else".  Yet many people attempt to avoid failure at all cost.  Perhaps it's been ingrained severely in our mind by our society that if you fail.... you are indeed a Total Failure. The fear of failure is associated with other fears such as the fear of being seen as a fool, the fear of being criticized, the fear of losing the respect of the group, and the fear of losing financial security.  AVOIDING FAILURE MEANS AVOIDING SUCCESS!

Many of us avoid taking risks because of our fear of looking bad if we fail.  We get so obsessed with being liked that we won't do things which we feel may make us look bad in the eyes of others.  Avoidance of risks becomes the norm.  This can be very detrimental to our creativity and to our aliveness.  We must learn to be fools if we are to be creative and live life to the fullest.

If you are afraid to fail due to your fear of what people will think about you, I have news for you:  Most people are going to think bad thoughts about you anyway.  In fact, when you are successful, they will even find nastier things to say.  The more successful you are, the more criticism you will attract.

So what's the big deal about failing?  You may as well go for it.  Chances are..... you will achieve success and make a big difference in your life.
